What Is Hawk-Eye in Tennis?

Hawk-Eye is the computer system used to make line calls and review challenges in professional tennis.

It uses cameras and tracking tech to show exactly where the ball landed — within millimeters.

1. How It Works
Multiple high-speed cameras track the ball in 3D. When a player challenges a line call (or in some events, when Hawk-Eye calls it live), the system shows a virtual replay of the ball’s trajectory and landing spot. The result is final — no arguing with the machine.

2. Why It Matters
Before Hawk-Eye, line calls were up to humans — and mistakes happened. Now, players can challenge close calls, and in some events, there are no human line judges at all. It’s changed how the game is played — and how fair it feels.

👂 Where You’ll Hear It

“She’s challenging the call — let’s check Hawk-Eye.”
Translation: She thinks the ball was in. The replay will decide.

“The call stands — Hawk-Eye confirms it was out.”
Translation: The original call was right. No do-over.
