What’s a Double Fault in Tennis?
A double fault happens when a player misses both their first and second serve — and loses the point automatically.
It’s one of the few ways in tennis to lose a point without a rally.
1. How It Works
Players get two chances to start a point with a legal serve. If the first serve misses, they get a second try. Miss that one too? That’s a double fault — and the other player gets the point.
2. Why It Matters
It’s basically a free giveaway. Too many double faults can derail a player’s momentum and confidence, especially under pressure. On the flip side, they can also be a lifeline for the opponent.
👂 Where You’ll Hear It
“That’s her seventh double fault of the match.”
Translation: Her serve’s off today — and it’s costing her.
“He just double-faulted on match point.”
Translation: He lost the match by missing both serves. Yikes.
