What’s the Tennis Ranking System?

The tennis world rankings (ATP for men, WTA for women) are based on how many points a player earns at tournaments over a rolling 52-week period.

More wins at bigger events = more points = higher ranking.

1. How It Works
Each tournament awards a set number of points depending on its level:

  • Grand Slam = 2000 points for the winner

  • Masters 1000 / WTA 1000 = 1000 points

  • 500s and 250s award less

Players defend their points from the previous year — so rankings change weekly as old results drop off and new ones are added.

2. Why It Matters
Rankings determine everything: seeding, tournament entry, wild card eligibility, and career momentum. A jump in the rankings can open doors — a drop can shut them fast.

👂 Where You’ll Hear It

“He jumped into the top 10 after that win.”
Translation: He earned big points — and just leveled up.

“She’s defending 1000 points this week.”
Translation: She won this tournament last year — and needs a strong showing to stay ranked where she is.
